Coast Guard, Coast Guard Auxiliary and Mayor of Corpus Christi to hold ribbon cutting ceremony for Loaner Lifejacket Program

*media invited*

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The media is invited to a ribbon cutting ceremony held by the Coast Guard Auxiliary to establish the Loaner Lifejacket Program. The program is designed to promote boating safety among recreational boaters.

WHO: The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 7-11, Capt. John Pasch, commander of Sector Corpus Christi, the Honorable Joe Adame, Mayor of Corpus Christi.

WHAT: Ribbon cutting ceremony for the Loaner Lifejacket Program

WHERE: Downtown Corpus Christi at the L-Head docks

WHEN: Saturday, December 3, 2011 at 3:00 p.m. (Following the dedication of the marina’s new fuel station.)

The Loaner Lifejacket Program was designed to help recreational boaters who may need to borrow a life jacket for a person on their boat. This Loaner Lifejacket box was generously funded by a grant from the Coastal Bend Regional Advisory Council – Injury Prevention.

The Coast Guard Auxiliary has also designed a boating safety sign that will be posted prominently at the L-heads in down town Corpus Christi. The sign provides contact information for boaters interested in a boating safety class. These classes offer an opportunity to learn more about boating equipment, understanding navigational rules, legal requirements of boating, boating emergencies, and other necessary topics to keepeveryone safe while underway.

The program is championed by Coast Guard Auxiliarist Curt Broomfield, who said that the program works on the honor system. “All we ask is that they return the lifejacket when they return to the dock,” said Broomfield.
