Coast Guard medevacs man from cruise ship off Galveston coast

HOUSTON — A Coast Guard helicopter crew medevaced an injured man from a cruise ship 120 miles off the coast of Galveston, Thursday evening.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Houston-Galveston received a report at approximately 10 p.m., that a 73-year-old man aboard the Carnival Triumph, an 893-foot cruise ship, had a blood clot in his foot and needed an immediate medevac.

An MH-65C Dolphin rescue helicopter and crew were launched from Coast Guard Air Station Houston at approximately 11:40 p.m. The crew successfully hoisted the man off the Carnival Triumph and transported him to awaiting emergency medical services at University of Texas Medical Branch Galveston.

"Due to great training and preparation by command center watchstanders and air station personnel, the Coast Guard was able to quickly respond to this medevac, despite the distance offshore," said Lt. Laura Salemme, command duty officer for Sector Houston-Galveston.

The man's condition is unknown.
