Station Houston to hold establishment ceremony

HOUSTON — The crew of Coast Guard Station Houston is scheduled to hold an official establishment ceremony at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 1, 2009, on the front lawn of Coast Guard Sector Houston-Galveston.

The small boat station is located close to the foot of the Sidney Sherman Bridge along the Houston Ship Channel.  The boathouse was severely damaged by Hurricane Ike, and the station personnel had been working in portable trailers while it was being repaired.

Station Houston's area of responsibility includes 80 miles of navigable waterways in the Houston area.  There are approximately 40 active duty crewmembers attached to Station Houston, and four 25-foot response boats assigned to the unit.  The missions of Station Houston will include search and rescue, law enforcement, and Level 1 port and waterway coastal security.

"The commissioning of Coast Guard Station Houston, in combination with our existing Harris County and City of Houston maritime partners, will enhance the maritime security and search and rescue capabilities on the Houston Ship Channel and Upper Galveston Bay. Station Houston stands ready to respond to all threats, all hazards, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year," said Capt. Jim Whitehead, Sector Houston-Galveston deputy commander.

Chief Petty Officer Thomas Rooks, who transfered to the area in summer of 2009, is the officer-in-charge of Station Houston.

***Media are invited to attend the commissioning ceremony for Station Houston.  Contact Petty Officer Patrick D. Kelley at (713) 578-3080 to R.S.V.P.  Interview opportunities will be available.***
