Coast Guard searches for missing surfer near Freeport

FREEPORT, Texas —The Coast Guard is searching for a missing surfer off the coast of Freeport, Friday.

The surfer, John Baker, 61, of Woodlands, was reported missing by his wife at 9:50 p.m. Wednesday. He last spoke to his wife at approximately 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, in which he stated that he was entering the water. Baker's 2006 silver Jeep Liberty was found unattended by officials in the parking lot at Surfside Beach, where Baker was reported to have entered the water.

Baker is said to have been surfing with a bright red Dewey Weber surf board, approximately 8-10 feet long and wearing a short sleeved, short legged black and red wetsuit.

The Coast Guard is currently searching with assets from Station Freeport and an MH-65C Dolphin helicopter from Air Station Houston.
