Coast Guard to offer glimpse into Mardi Gras security

Who: U.S. Coast Guard

What: Allowing media access during Mardi Gras security patrols

When: Coast Guard MH-65C Dolphin helicopter overflights of Mardi Gras parades Feb. 10 and 12.  Coast Guard Cutter Sturgeon dockside media availability, Feb. 14 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., and patrol of the Mississippi River, Feb. 15 at 12:30 p.m.

Where: Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans, 400 Russell Avenue, Belle Chase, LA 70143; and Governor Nicholls Street Wharf, 1 Canal Street, New Orleans, LA‎.

The Coast Guard has traditionally worked to keep participants safe during the Mardi Gras season.  The Coast Guard Cutter Sturgeon, an 87-foot cutter homeported in Grand Isle, La., will be allowing media to come aboard for a tour and interviews on Feb. 14 and 15.  Also, Air Station New Orleans is inviting the media to fly with them on Feb. 10 and 12 at 5:30 p.m. as they provide air security during parades in Uptown New Orleans. 

**MEDIA NOTE: Media must contact Petty Officer Stephen Lehmann if they plan on attending any or both of these events.  Media interested in the overflights may be asked to pool imagery as seats are limited to one rider per flight.  Be advised that both flights will be in the air for in excess of two hours.***
