COAST GUARD RESPONDS TO HOUSE BOAT ACCIDENT; | |
CINCINNATI - The Coast Guard is continuing to search for two people in the Ohio River who were reportedly aboard their house boat with two other people when it sank near downtown Cincinnati, this morning. One person was rescued with minor injuries, another was recovered deceased this morning and two people remain missing this afternoon. The names and hometowns of the people, as well as the name of the houseboat, are not known at this time. Authorities from Coast Guard Marine Safety Detachment Cincinnati have established a safety zone on the Ohio River between mile markers 465 and 468, closing the waterway to maritime traffic in that area to facilitate the search and rescue efforts. Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Ohio Valley in Louisville, Ky., were notified at about 3:15 a.m. by the crew of the tugboat Titletown U.S.A. that the houseboat was sinking at about mile marker 468.5 of the Ohio River, near downtown Cincinnati. The watchstanders immediately began broadcasting an urgent marine information broadcast, asking that any mariners in the area keep a sharp lookout, assist if possible and report any sightings to the Coast Guard. An MSD Cincinnati boatcrew is participating in the search efforts. Assisting in the response efforts are crews from Campbell County, Ky., Water Rescue, the Fire Department of Bellevue- Dayton, Ky., the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources, Campbell County, Ky., Office of Emergency Management, American Red Cross, Boone County, Ky., Water Rescue, Hamilton County, Ohio, Sheriff's Department, Kenton County, Ky., Emergency Management, Campbell County, Ky., Coroner, Greater Cincinnati Marine Services, Clermont County, Ohio, Sheriff's Department, and the Cincinnati Fire Department. Additionally, investigators from MSD Cincinnati are on scene interviewing the crew of the tugboat Titletown U.S.A. Alcohol screenings have been completed and drug screenings have been ordered for the crew. The cause of the accident is under investigation. ### | |
